This week (11/04/2018) sees the hugely anticipated release of a second edition BIM protocol drafted by Beale & Company. For those that have not used the BIM protocol before it is a supplementary legal agreement document that is usually incorporated into professional service appointment and contracts via amendment. The second edition CIC BIM protocol has gone a long way in addressing the evolution in standards and feedback since the first edition in 2013.
The contractual requirements for a BIM project is a hotly contested topic with sometimes much confusion over its use within a project. The new Protocol more closely aligns with Pas 1192-2 and covers the use of information and models.
Some of the improvements and changes include:
Responsibility Matrix – The removal of an MPDT and the inclusion of a responsibility Matrix that defines responsibility for information and model production.
The protocol takes a step back in terms of its precedence in an agreement and is applicable only if there is a conflict in respect of clause 3, 4 and Appendix 1 or 2 of the Protocol.
Information particulars – Apendix 2 more closely aligns with requirements set out in the Employees information requirements and BIM execution plan.
Updates in terminology – In the previous protocol some of the terminology such as Level of definition and level of detail was confusing when reading into the PAS 1192. This has now been improved.
Security – The new protocol addresses documents that have been created between this and the previous protocol of which the Pas 1192-5 is a part of.
Procurement methods – The new protocol has been structured to cover a larger range of procurement methods including traditional procurement and alliancing.
There are many more changes than is common to second edition standards changes with many improvements that will hopefully increase its use within a contractually obligated BIM project.
